Every year our Chamber receives a donation from the May family to continue the legacy that John Milton and Sue May left on Winterville. The May’s strongly believed in the power of higher education and community support. In their honor, we choose a local high school senior that has shown their dedication to community and is preparing to attend a four-year university in the fall to help them in their monetary needs.
This year our selected recipient is a Winterville local graduating from South Central High School, Grace Greenberg. Grace will be attending UNC Chapel Hill in the fall as she starts her journey to become an OBGYN! She was selected as this year’s recipient not just because of her outstanding goals and excellent grades, but for the dedication she has shown to her community and lives she’s touched along the way. Of all the applications our Board reviewed, Grace’s reference forms stood out the most. Her swim coach wrote an incredible reference letter detailing the way Grace always came to practice or a meet with an incredible attitude. They noted that although it was the coach’s job to be guiding and helping the students, they felt that the impact Grace had on them was so great, they may have learned just as much, if not more from her.
Grace had the privilege of being able to work at ECU Health and learn more about the different opportunities available to her future. While she had always loved babies and was looking at a career as a midwife or labor and delivery nurse, she realized through this experience that she wanted to take it further and become an OBGYN and be able to specifically help serve the underserved.
We are confident that the May family’s scholarship is well spent on Grace, and look forward to seeing where college, medical school, and her career takes her in life. There’s no doubt that she will be able to reach whatever goals she sets for herself and make an impact on those around her as she does.
We’d like to extend our gratitude to John May and his wife, Jeannie, for continuing to honor his parent’s memory through this scholarship to help our local seniors.
