Every year since 2014 our Chamber has chosen a graduating senior from Winterville to receive our John Milton and Sue May Scholarship. This scholarship was started by the May family, in honor of their parents – John and Sue May. The May’s were dedicated members of our community who believed strongly in the power of higher education. Their legacy is honored by assisting a student that shows exceptional drive, community involvement, and the desire to go to a 4-year university with big plans for their future.
This year our recipient is South Central High School graduate Roxanne Kirby. Roxanne will be attending Pembroke in the fall where she will be a nursing major. She has been a soccer player for about as long as she could walk, and the soccer program and nursing school Pembroke has is what drew her there. Roxanne says she’s looking forward to the challenge of college courses, college soccer, and working towards her future career. She chose nursing after falling in love with the health care field her freshman year of high school when she volunteered at the hospital. She loves helping and taking care of people, and it’s clear her kind disposition will aide her bedside manner. Roxanne’s goals don’t stop there though, after she becomes an RN and gets a few years under her belt she intends to go back to receive her masters and become a Pediatric Nurse Practioner! We are confident she will achieve her goals and are excited to see her get there.
We are so thankful for the opportunity to assist such a bright young woman with these incredible goals. Roxanne, along with the whole Winterville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors would like to thank the May family for their continued support of our community in this way.
Congratulations Roxanne Kirby!
